“A Lenda do Caboclo” is one of Villa Lobos’ most popular short works, and it was written in 1920. Very Brazilian in character, it features a syncopated melody over a lightly swinging, triple/duple base. (Lenda is roughly equivalent to “ballad,” while caboclo means a native person – aboriginal or of mixed race).

Gaspar Sanz wrote his book “Music Instruction on the Spanish Guitar” in 1674, which includes this popular dance, “Canarios” written for solo guitar in dotted style. Here it is presented in an arrangement for Guitar Trio, in the adaptation for guitar trio, each part assumes a specific role, combining to recreate the harmonic richness and texture of the original piece.
