“Georgia on My Mind” is one of the most iconic songs in American music. Written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics), the most famous version of “Georgia on My Mind” was recorded by Ray Charles in 1960 for his album The Genius Hits the Road. It has been performed by numerous artists over the decades, including Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson, Michael Bublé, and many others.

The piece is a ragtime with its syncopations and banjo-like effects. The dynamic range is quite large and very effective. The B section of this dance is interrupted on several occasions by the love-death leitmotif of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, marked avec une grande émotion (with great feeling). Each quotation is followed by banjo imitations.
